CATERING:
Rosie's in the Valley
: $7.95 per person; included: chicken, tri-tip, rolls, 3 salads (June, 2004).
Versailles
: West LA and Encino; chicken with garlic dinners cost $6.95 including chicken, white rice, black beans, and plantains; we ordered 57 dinners for 100 people and had at least one-half left; it seems like the bigger the crowd the less is needed (1999).
Burger Continental
: middle eastern and other cuisine, recommended by Ed and Carolee Lawrence; located in Pasadena but will deliver; see menu at www.burgercontinental.com.
Casablanca
(see info under Dine-In below).
FOOD QUANTITIES:
Pizza: plan on 2 pieces per person (16 pizzas for 100 people was way too much).
Ice Cream: 3 gallons will serve 100 people.
Ham and Turkey Breast: combo to serve 80 people in September 1998; 14 pounds plain roasted turkey breast at Smart & Final was very good and cost $3.33 per pound.
Honey Baked Ham: 2 half hams each weighed approximately 8 pounds; cost was $77 for the two hams.
Submarine Sandwich: 7 feet long serves 42 people or 6 people per foot; Submarine claimed that 1 foot serves 3 to 4 people.
Potato Salad: from Smart & Final was well received and more popular than the pasta salad; 5 pounds of each salad served 42 people.
DINE-IN
:
Dinner at Magee's Kitchen: second floor of Farmer's Market. Tel: 1-323-938 4127; call after 9:15 AM; $17.00 - $20.00 each for a full dinner of both turkey and corned beef; seats up to 125 diners; tables of 6 or 8 preferred; can bring wine in from the outside!
Dinner at Shanghai Reds: waterfront dining; 1-310-823-4522; 13814 Fiji Way, Marina del Rey.
Dinner at Casablanca: 220 Lincoln Boulevard, Venice; 1-310-392-5751; $10.00 - $17.00 each; this funky redux of Rick's Cafe in Casablanca is littered with Bogart and Bergman posters, film stills, tropical props and the occasional neon beer sign; In the center of the dining room, a traditionally dressed woman grills hundreds of fresh tortillas over an ancient-looking stove; the menu steers diners away from tacos and enchiladas toward eclectic steak and seafood options.
